Advanced Structural Analysis (Two Days)

{module Slides – Advanced Structure}

Advanced Structural Analysis  (Two Days)

How can you repair a rug if you don’t understand how it is put together?  A comprehensive working knowledge of rug structure is essential for a rug repair technician and restorer.   The class is intended for restorers but the material covered is fundamental to learning rug identification, making it appropriate for all rug care specialists seeking to advance their knowledge in rug identification and structure.

Learn why a Lavar looks different from a standard Kerman.  How is a Western Anatolian rug different from an Eastern Anatolian rug?  How do you identify the many types and sub-groups of Caucasian rugs?  Is a Khotan really a Chinese rug?  Designs are copied, but weaves don’t lie!  Applicants need to have a good working knowledge of rug ID, terminology and structure.

  • Construction and de-construction; learn how rugs are put together by taking them apart.
  • Burn tests and some simple reagent dye tests for differentiating synthetic and some specific natural dyes.
  • Structure and materials:  analyzing spin and ply.  What does ‘Z2S’ mean?
  • Beyond knot counts: learn to write a full structural description of any hand-made rug you see.
  • Bring your own camera and learn to take and use close-up digital photographic images of weaves to identify and catalogue structures.

Included with $1800.00 tuition:

  • Linen counter
  • Flash drive with a library of weave photos
  • A copy of Marla Mallett’s book “Woven Structures: A Guide To Oriental Rug and Textile Analysis.”
  • Suggested reading list
